As a result of heightened fears of the communist influence on American institutions and espionage by Soviet agents during the 1940s and 1950s, Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy and his supporters used charges of communist sympathies or disloyalty to attack a number of politicians and other individuals inside and outside of government. 2 According to Miller, ‘the prime business of a play is to arouse the passions of its audience.
